William T. Martin papers, 1861-1865 [microform].

The collection consists of a microfilm copy of the papers of William T. Martin from 1861-1865. The papers contain approximately 300 pieces including 155 letters, 110 of which were written during the Civil War: 52 by William, 26 to him, 23 by or to Oliver Martin, and 9 by other members of the family. Included also are 32 Civil War documents, and a number of other items, including notes, receipts, memos, postcards, and fragments. Other correspondents were Elizabeth Martin, W. T. Holland, M. A. and Jackson Dalton, M. A. Phillips, H. F. Reeder, N. C. Hunt, and John Glenn, the majority of whom were relatives of the Martins. Many of these letters reveal the social, religious, and economic conditions of the people of the hill country of northwestern South Carolina.

William T. Martin, Confederate soldier, was born circa 1842, lived in Pickens County, South Carolina, and died August 5, 1862, in a hospital near Richmond, Virginia. He was a member of Orr's 1st South Carolina Regiment of Rifles and left Camp Pickens for Sullivan's Island, South Carolina (September 1861) where his regiment helped build the gunboat Palmetto State. He went to Virginia and was engaged in the Seven Days' Battles (July 1862) before he became ill and died at Chickahominy Hospital near...
